Description
This device is suited to a 5kw single phase generator and automatically maintains the generator output terminal voltage at a set value under varying load and operating temperature. It controls the output voltage by sensing it at the power generating coil and comparing it to a stable reference. An error signal is then used to adjust an average value of the field current. The entire point of having an automatic voltage regulator is to be sure that the voltage sent down the line is stable and not subjected to variables that may damage sensitive electronic components. Generators that are used as standby power plants need to have a voltage regulator to ensure stability in output.
Benefits of using a 5KW Automatic Voltage Regulator
The main benefit of using an automatic voltage regulator is that you can preset the required voltage and the automatic voltage regulator will ensure that it keeps to this parameter. The modern solid state device measures the output voltage and compares it to a set point and then generates an error signal that is used to adjust the excitation of the generator. As the excitation current in the field winding of the generator increases so will the terminal voltage. The AVR will control current by using power electronic devices and normally a small part of the generators output is used to provide current for the field winding.
Improving the efficiency of a system with an AVR
Where a generator is connected in parallel with other sources such as an electric transmission grid changing the excitation has more of an effect on the reactive power produced by the generator than on its terminal voltage which is mostly set by the connected power system. Where multiple generators are connected in parallel the AVR system will have circuits to ensure that all the generators operate at the same power factor. This can allow you to have as many generators as necessary to power your plant and this number can be expanded at will. Running a plant efficiently without an AVR is nigh impossible.
