About this part
Pistons, rings, pins and connecting rods turn combustion pressure into crankshaft rotation. Worn rings let gas blow past into the crankcase and oil past into the cylinder, which costs power and fuel and fouls the engine.
When to replace it
- Crankcase blow-by and oil mist from the breather
- High oil consumption with blue exhaust smoke
- Low or uneven compression readings
- Scored pistons or bores found on strip-down
