R201 Automatic Voltage Regulator
The R201 Automatic Voltage Regulator (part R201) controls the alternator's excitation so the output voltage stays steady as the load changes.
About this part
An AVR senses the alternator's output voltage and adjusts the current in the exciter field many times a second to hold it at the set point. Without it, voltage swings with every change in load and can damage connected equipment.
Features
- 1 phase 240 VAC ± 10%,
- 380 V at 480 VAC ± 10% for three-phase 2-wire detection
When to replace it
- Output voltage that is too high, too low or unstable
- No output voltage although the engine runs normally
- Lights flickering or voltage dipping as loads switch on
- A burnt or damaged board after a lightning strike or short
Before you order
Set the voltage and stability adjustments with the generator off load first, then check the response with a load applied.
Match the number stamped on the part you are removing, or the number in your engine or alternator manual, before ordering. Part numbers are shown for reference so the right replacement can be identified.
Questions
Will a universal AVR work on my alternator?
Often, if the sensing, excitation current and supply voltage suit. Send us the alternator make and model and the old AVR number and we will confirm.
Why did my AVR fail?
Common causes are overloading, a short on the output, a failed rotating diode or a surge. Check the rectifier diodes before fitting a new regulator.
