About this part

An AVR senses the alternator's output voltage and adjusts the current in the exciter field many times a second to hold it at the set point. Without it, voltage swings with every change in load and can damage connected equipment.

When to replace it

  • Output voltage that is too high, too low or unstable
  • No output voltage although the engine runs normally
  • Lights flickering or voltage dipping as loads switch on
  • A burnt or damaged board after a lightning strike or short

Before you order

Set the voltage and stability adjustments with the generator off load first, then check the response with a load applied.

If the old part has no readable number, send us a clear photo with the engine or alternator nameplate and we will identify it before you buy.

Questions

Will a universal AVR work on my alternator?

Often, if the sensing, excitation current and supply voltage suit. Send us the alternator make and model and the old AVR number and we will confirm.

Why did my AVR fail?

Common causes are overloading, a short on the output, a failed rotating diode or a surge. Check the rectifier diodes before fitting a new regulator.
